Learn Your Tōnalli

What began as a passion project has evolved into something more.

In an effort to understand the world around me, I began gazing into the obsidian mirror, looking deeper into myself and my bloodline, to learn the language of my ancestors and the land. I created a calendar/divination app based on our ancient calendaring system I’ve called Tōnalli. Those who kept the count were called Tonalpouhqui and were mostly women, as were our astronomers.

The Spaniards and European settlers drove our sacred time keepers underground, where knowledge of the cosmos was shared in secret. Our ancient calendaring system which predates contact with European colonists by roughly 2,000-3,000 years was nearly lost if not for the resistance and perseverance of those who chose to defy rule of law-for the hope of the future.

In that same spirit, I’ve recreated our dual calendaring system which marks 365 days called the xiuhpohualli and 260 religious days called the tonalpohualli. It’s important to note that the two calendars worked as one, weaving the fabric of time and space.
